[Podcast] What is it like cruising from Darwin to Broome?

Carolyne Jasinski spent 10 days aboard the Coral Adventurer, taking in the delights of the Kimberley and the north west. Amazing landscapes, magnificent rivers and canyons with waterfalls…and did we mention the wildlife from whales to dolphins, sharks, turtles and of course, the odd crocodile. Photo: Carolyne Jasinski

Expedition Cruise Specialists launches The Ghan & Coral Adventurer's Kimberley program

Australia’s Expedition Cruise Specialists have just released their 2020 The Ghan & Coral Adventurer’s Kimberley program, combining two of Australia’s most iconic journeys into one epic 16-day package.

The itinerary, which commences in Adelaide and concludes in Broome, includes two nights Gold Class travel through the Red Centre to Darwin aboard the legendary Ghan. Guests will be able to enjoy fine dining in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant carriage, accompanied by a curated list of Australian wines, beers and spirits. There’s also included off-train excursions in both Alice Springs and Katherine, with a cruise through stunning Nitmiluk Gorge a highlight.

On arrival in the Top End capital Darwin, there’s three nights of included four-star accommodation, allowing ample time to explore the sites and perhaps even experience some of the region’s National Parks.

The second half of the journey takes travellers on a voyage showcasing Western Australia’s outback Kimberley Coast aboard the stylish expedition ship Coral Adventurer. Launch in May 2019, the 120-passenger, 93-metre Coral Adventurer promises travellers the opportunity to experience all the icons of this remote coastline in total comfort and style.

Making use of the Kimberley’s most flexible range of excursion craft, expeditioners aboard Coral Adventurer will be able to get up close and personal with majestic waterfalls including King George and Mitchell Falls, explore the exposed corals of Montgomery Reef at low tide and ride zodiacs through the Horizontal Falls of Talbot Bay, considered by renowned documentary film-maker Sir David Attenborough to be ‘one of the greatest natural wonders of the world’.

Led by an experienced expedition team and knowledgeable guest lecturers, there will also be ample time to seek out the Kimberley’s ancient rock art, including the mysterious Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) Paintings. A further highlight will be travelling ashore in Careening Bay to witness the famed Mermaid Boab Tree, 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of the tree’s ‘HMS Mermaid 1820’ inscription, originally carved by a Mermaid crew member during Phillip Parker King’s coastal survey in 1820.

There are eight departures of The Ghan & Coral Adventurer’s Kimberley program being offered in 2020, with prices starting at just $11,990 per person, twin share for Gold Class travel aboard The Ghan, three nights 4-star accommodation in Darwin and a ten-night Kimberley cruise in a Coral Deck Stateroom aboard the new Coral Adventurer. Guests also have the option to upgrade their travel to Platinum service aboard the Ghan and Balcony Staterooms while cruising the coast.

Coral Princess Cruises releases "Spring Special" on Kimberley Expedition Cruises

Inline images 1

Coral Princess Cruises, Australia's and the South Pacific's pioneer of small-ship expedition cruising, is offering Spring Specials on selected Kimberley expeditions during August and September 2013 aboard their state-of-art, 72 passenger small-ship Oceanic Discoverer. In great news for single travellers, Coral Princess has waived the single supplement across the eligible departures, a saving of up to $4,895 per person. When two passengers travel together in the same stateroom a 15% discount is offered, a saving of up to $3,087 per couple.

For even greater savings, the 15% Spring Special discount can be combined with Coral Princess's Xplorers Club past passenger discounts of up to 10%. The Kimberley wilderness of Western Australia is twice the size of the state of Victoria, with a population of just 30 000. There is no better way to discover the remarkable Kimberley than aboard a purpose built small-ship, and Coral Princess's 10-night voyages between Darwin and Broome explore some of the planet's oldest and most awe-inspiring landscapes.

The Kimberley's rivers carve their way through ancient, eroded mountains that were once the height of the Himalaya, dropping in champagne waterfalls such as the 80-metre King George Falls. Excursions ashore visit rock art galleries where Bradshaw (Gwion) paintings - the world's oldest known art - record a human history stretching back 50,000 years.

Exploring the Kimberley Coast in August and September affords guests the unique opportunity to experience the region's annual whale migration. The cruise also explores the 800-odd islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago, including an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the Horizontal Waterfalls, where the largest tides in the southern hemisphere force their way between rocky cliffs in a formidable display of the forces of nature.

Spring Special prices for the 10-night Kimberley expedition start at $7,471.50 per person, twin share (or $6,592.50 for past passengers) whilst single traveller fares start at $8,790. The Spring Special discounts are available on Oceanic Discoverer expeditions departing on 26 August, 6 September and 16 September 2013. The reduced prices include all meals, lectures and services of expedition staff and excursions. The discounts apply to all new bookings on eligible departures and are available until sold out. "It's a diverse and vast landscape that takes time to explore," explained Tony Briggs, Founder and Managing Director of Coral Princess. "The advantage of a Coral Princess cruise is that our ships are Australian-owned and flagged. This enables us to spend up to 30 per cent more time exploring the Kimberley during a 10-night cruise than the foreign-flagged vessels that must, by law, include an international port in an itinerary of the same length."
Having the extra time means that shore excursions are more frequent and more leisurely. On the Coral Princess cruise, there is an optional helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau for views of the impressive four-tiered Mitchell Falls, and bushwalks to idyllic swimming holes. The cruise explores the 800-odd islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago, including an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the Horizontal Waterfalls, where the largest tides in the southern hemisphere force their way between rocky cliffs in a formidable display of the forces of nature.
Coral Princess – which pioneered small-ship cruising in the Kimberley 15 years ago, offers guests a choice of two purpose-built vessels: the 48-passenger Coral Princess or the luxurious 72-passenger Oceanic Discoverer.
"Our all-Australian crew and team of guest lecturers delivers an unmatched level of experience, knowledge and service that has seen our clients returning year after year," said Briggs.
Earlybird prices for the 10-night Kimberley cruise start at $5,908 per person, twin share, aboard the Coral Princess and $7,183 aboard Oceanic Discoverer, including all meals, lectures and services of expedition staff on board, excursions and group transfers. There are regular departures from both Darwin and Broome between April and October 2011.
The 15 per cent discount applies to all new bookings on departures between April 8 and May 6. The offer is for the cruise only, and is available until November 30 or until sold out.
At the beginning and end of the season, the Kimberley cruise can be combined with an 11-night voyage, Across The Top of Australia, between Cairns and Darwin, exploring the remote reaches of the Great Barrier Reef, Cape York, Torres Strait, Arnhem Land and the Cobourg Peninsula – visiting places of exquisite beauty and cultural significance so remote that they can't be reached any other way. Departing in March, April and October, prices for this 11-night cruise start at $6950 per person. There is a 10 per cent discount when booking the two cruises together.

Watch Whales while Cruising the Kimberley with Coral Princess

The world's largest humpback whale migration sees up to 6000 whales heading up the 'superhighway' along Western Australia's coast to calve in the warm waters off the Kimberley between August and November. Coral Princess extended its Kimberley cruise program last year – and discovered that late season whale watching is 'simply incredible'.

"We lost count of how many whales we saw on the voyage. We had daily sightings, and several came within metres of the ship, with mothers appearing to 'show' their calves to the human onlookers," said Vicki Briggs, Director of Coral Princess Cruises.

"We're used to seeing whales on our voyages, but the late season departures were incredible in terms of the frequency of sightings, and for the experience of seeing mothers and calves interacting."

Coral Princess Cruises has added extra departures for its most popular cruise - a voyage exploring the remote Kimberley coast between Broome and Darwin – extending the season from its usual start in April through to October.

The 10-night Kimberley cruise visits Kuri Bay, home of the South Pacific pearl industry, and ventures ashore to view the world-famous Bradshaw (Gwion) paintings, - the world's oldest known indigenous art – and the towering, 80-metre King George Falls, the tallest waterfalls in Western Australia. There is an optional helicopter flight over the Mitchell Plateau for views of the impressive four-tiered Mitchell Falls, as well as excursions into secluded gorges and to rock pools perfect for swimming. The cruise explores the Buccaneer Archipelago – made up of 800 islands – and includes an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the 'Horizontal Waterfall', where the tide floods between rocky cliffs.

The Kimberley wilderness of Western Australia is three times larger than England with a population of just 30 000.

Coral Princess operates two ships in the Kimberley. The Oceanic Discoverer accommodates a maximum of just 72 guests and travels with a purpose-built excursion vessel, Xplorer and inflatable Zodiacs. Coral Princess accommodates a maximum of just 48 guests. In true expedition style, the itinerary may vary to take maximum advantage of opportunities to venture ashore, to explore the many waterfalls, river systems and reefs  - or to stop and watch the whales!

Prices for the 10-night Kimberley cruise start at A$6850 (A$6950 in 2011) aboard Coral Princess and A$8250 (A$8450 in 2011) aboard Oceanic Discoverer. Prices are per person, twin share and include the cruise, all meals, lectures and services of expedition staff on board and group transfers. There are regular departures from both Darwin and Broome between April and October.
