North Star Cruises: True North

North Star Cruises was the first permanent and is now the longest established charter cruise operator to cover the vast wilderness of the far north of Western Australia. Owner Craig Howson has been leading exploration, diving and fishing cruises in the region since 1987.

The company specialises in live-aboard wilderness cruises along 2000 kilometres of Kimberley coastline and coral atoll cruises at the Rowley Shoals - three atolls perched on the edge of Australia's continental shelf, 300 kilometres west of Broome.

Now based in Broome, the company commenced operations in Fremantle, Western Australia, in June 1985, placing an order for a 15 metre launch, North Star surveyed to carry 6 passengers and 2 crew for overnight charters and 14 passengers and 2 crew for day charters.

In April 1987, Craig Howson decided to seek work in Broome. There, he began day fishing and diving charters with demand soon growing for longer cruises. His company initiated the first live-aboard charters along the Kimberley coast and to the Rowley Shoals. In the 1987 season, Craig chartered three ‘True North Wilderness Cruises’ and three ‘True North Coral Atoll Cruises’ dive trips.

Market demand for North Star trips soon increased, so in April 1991 North Star IV was launched… and in September 1993, a new 70-foot luxurious vessel, True North, was launched to accommodate 14 passengers (10 comfortably) and 3 crew for overnight charters and 22 passengers and 3 crew for day charters. In 1998, to meet market demands for increased occupancy, comfort and further exploration, another vessel was launched.

However the companies most recent vessel, launched on Thursday 25th November 2004, is by far the most impressive.

The ship, again called True North, was built by Image Marine, a division of Austal Ships, builders of Greg Norman's Aussie Rules. At a cost of $12 million, she represents the largest single investment in Western Australia's marine tourism industry and is now yours to enjoy.

SPECIAL GUESTS JOIN TRUE NORTH IN 2011

North Star Cruises Australia is pleased to announce that some very special guests are scheduled to embark on the adventure-cruise ship TRUE NORTH during 2011 for part of the 'extraordinary people in extraordinary places' campaign.  Special guests to be announced for the first phase of the campaign include pioneers from the arts and entertainment industry with many more to be announced later in the year.

Jacinda Bayne
To kick off the campaign, guests will enjoy the company and insight of Jacinda Bayne who is a much-lauded landscape artist and recent winner of the Mandjar Art Award. Jacinda will surely be in awe of the 'waterfall season' when she joins a Kimberley Ultimate cruise in early April and guests will have unique opportunity to see Jacinda bring this spectacular landscape to canvas.

Multi-award winning art teacher, Mark Norval is fast establishing himself as a TRUE NORTH favourite. Mark's relaxed and informal lessons were very popular with guests when he completed a 2010 Kimberley cruise and the inspirational Kimberley will again be 'centre of piece' when Mark rejoins the TRUE NORTH in late April.

Sarah McKenzie
Sarah McKenzie will be a real treat for guests embarking on the TRUE NORTH in May. At 22 years of age Sarah is already a pianist, vocalist and composer of remarkable flare and technique. Sarah has performed at some of Australia's highest profile jazz events and alongside headliners such as James Morrison and Michael Buble. Sarah's performances in the ship's lounge are bound to compliment an already impressive stage.

True North also welcomes Linda Klarfeld who is one of Australia's most accomplished bronze sculptors. Her works can be seen in many venues from places of worship to sporting halls of fame. However, when Linda joins a Kimberley cruise in August it will be the first time that she has taken her art to sea. Linda will offer guests opportunity to 'try their hand' at sculpting and some may even be fortunate enough to have their Kimberley experience immortalised in a very different form indeed!

Phil Ceberano and Russell Robertson
True North is thrilled to welcome back one of Australia's most talented guitarists, Phil Ceberano.  Phil has previously impressed True North guests with his entertaining performances – both on and off the stage when he embarked on an 'Ultimate Kimberley' cruise in April 2010. This time Phil teams up with good mate and former AFL Star, Russell Robertson. Phil and Russell met during the filming of the TV show 'It Takes Two' where Russell was runner-up performing with Phil's sister the fabulous, Kate Ceberano.  The pair went on to record Russell's debut album 'Higher' with Phil producing and performing.  Phil & Russell perform around Australia for many one-off VIP events. No doubt we have a couple of characters on our hands and the entertainment is bound to extend well beyond the ship's lounge!

Cruise Weekly Comment: Adventure Cruising – Aussie Style

For lots of people, the idea of an adventure cruise means some far off, distant land, icebergs and glaciers. But some dinkum Aussie operators provide world-class products right here from our favourite cities.

Of those operators sailing Australian-flagged vessels with all-Australian crew, North Star Cruises in Broome, Coral Princess Cruises in Cairns and Captain Cook Cruises in Sydney come quickly to mind with itineraries covering the entire coastline of Australia, including the Murray River.

Iconic destinations such as the Kimberley and Great Barrier Reef are well covered, but dig deeper and you’ll find semi-secret locations such as the Rowley Shoals in WA and Cape York and Arnhem Land across our Top End. North Star Cruises continue their Southern Safari out of Adelaide that covers Kangaroo Island and Eyre Peninsula with the exciting “Jaws” shark cage dive as highlight.

Coral Princess Cruises, one of the premium operators in the Kimberley, are even offering a free Great Barrier Reef Cruise for every new booking in the Kimberley this year. (this offer was supposed to expire end August, but tell them CW said it was extended by 7 days for subscribers only!) Otherwise a 15% earlybird applies for 2010 dates.

It’s a bit harder to keep track of some of the smaller operators offering niche products, but Pearl Seas Cruises, Cannon Charters, Great Escape (pic r), Matrix, K2O and One Tide all offer intimate vessels of around a dozen passengers and can be booked through the one-stop Kimberley Cruise Centre or direct. These little ships are great for divers, fishers and small corporate or family groups.

The multi-award-winning Orion Expedition Cruises are an Australian Private Company operating the 106-passenger Bahaman-flagged Orion. The “grand dame” of our adventure fleet, Orion offers the nearest thing to a big ship experience, yet still keeps that adventurous touch. Their just-announced 2010 brochure includes a wealth of local cruising options including our east coast, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia – many of which are firsts for Orion. The loyal following will have plenty of reasons for repeat cruises next year and new cruisers may want to try them too.

So if you’re hankering for an adventure cruise and don’t want the jetlag, there are stacks of great opportunities in brilliant vessels right on our doorstep. Print this page now, race into your favourite travel agent and get aboard!

Travellers offered unique opportunity to experience ultra luxury adventure cruise ship True North with special ‘beat the economic slowdown’ incentives.

North Star Cruises has unveiled a raft of special incentives to battle the economic slowdown.

For a limited time, consumers can take advantage of three 10% discounts.

North Star Cruises General Manager Peter Trembath said there had never been a better time to experience the luxury and adventure of a True North cruise.

“If you were ever thinking of experiencing the iconic True North, now is the time, with discounted special deals that are never likely to be repeated,” said Mr Trembath.

Specials include:

North Star’s General Manager, Peter Trembath said interest in this remote region had never been greater as today’s travellers increasingly sought out rare unexplored areas of the world.

“There are more so-called ‘un-contacted people’ living in West Papua than in any other region on earth,” said Mr Trembath.

“It really is one of the few remaining wilderness areas on the planet, making an adventure-cruise to this area a truly remarkable and even life-changing experience,” he said.

“This could well be the most stunning region that the True North has ever visited.”
