News from Broome and the Kimberley Coast

Hello from sunny Broome, and welcome to our mid-season news from the magnificent Kimberley Coast.

Blessed with beautiful blue skies and balmy 28 degree days, the streets of Broome are bustling with tourists flocking to explore the pristine wilderness on our doorstep, and to escape the winter blues.

Being peak season it's also a busy time for The Great Escape Charter Company; we've seen our first round of 13 night Kimberley Classic Adventures come and go and made some wonderful new friends along the way. Two groups booked the whole boat and each had a festive 2 weeks from Wyndham to Broome; what a way to reunite with friends!

Our first round of 7 night Southern Kimberley Experiences have passed and Skipper Scotty, a favourite with guests, returned to join the crew, and guide guests through the land he is so passionate and knowledgeable about.

Now we return to the full 13 night cruises and while conditions are perfect, the waterfalls are still flowing along the entire coastline, thanks to the amazing Wet Season we had at the start of the year. The whales are also appearing as they move up the West Coast of Oz heading for Camden Harbour, a prime area for whale mating and breeding.

Help Save the Kimberley Coast

Those of you who have had the opportunity to experience the incredibly pristine wilderness of the Kimberley Coast will understand the importance of preserving and protecting this precious region for now, and for future generations.

The region is under threat of a proposed liquid gas processing plant development at James Price Point near Broome, and now is an important time to voice concerns about destroying this vital wilderness. To find out more you can read about what is happening here and if you would like to send a letter in protest you can visit this page on the Save the Kimberley website.

Coral Princess releases Spring Specials of up to 25% on selected expeditions.

Australia and the South Pacific’s pioneer of small-ship expedition cruising Coral Princess Cruises is offering Spring Specials of between 15 and 25 per cent on September, October & November 2011 departures of their Kimberley Coast, Papua New Guinea and Melanesia expeditions aboard the state-of-art, 72 passenger small ship Oceanic Discoverer.

The Kimberley wilderness of Western Australia is three times larger than England with a population of just 30 000. Coral Princess’s 10-night voyages before Darwin and Broome cruise through one of the planet’s oldest and most awe-inspiring sea and landscapes. Rivers carve their way through ancient, eroded mountains that were once the height of the Himalaya, dropping in champagne waterfalls such as the 80-metre King George Falls. Excursions ashore visit rock art galleries where Bradshaw (Gwion) paintings - the world’s oldest known art - record a human history stretching back 50,000 years.

Exploring the Kimberley Coast in September and October affords guests the unique opportunity to experience the region’s annual whale migration. The cruise also explores the 800-odd islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago, including an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the Horizontal Waterfalls, where the largest tides in the southern hemisphere force their way between rocky cliffs in a formidable display of the forces of nature.

Spring Special prices for the 10-night Kimberley cruise start at $6,337.50 per person aboard Oceanic Discoverer for departures on 30 September & 10 October 2011 and $7,182.50 per person on 9 & 19 September 2011 departures. The reduced prices include all meals, lectures and services of expedition staff on board and excursions.

Discovering Papua New Guinea and Melanesia by small ship offers even the most well travelled expeditioner the opportunity for new and unique experiences. During the 12-night Papua New Guinea expedition between Cairns and Rabaul, guests will enjoy the opportunity to come face to face with villagers in their traditional communities, experience the largest area of rainforest outside of the Amazon and snorkel over some of the world’s most pristine coral reef systems. Throughout the 15-night Melanesia itinerary from Cairns to Noumea, guests will explore Papua New Guinea, the rarely visited Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia, travelling well beyond the reach of larger cruise ships to enjoy authentic experiences and the opportunity to interact with the South Pacific’s most exotic people and scenic locations.

Coral Princess Cruises is offering 15% discounts on these 12-night Papua New Guinea and 15-night Melanesia expeditions aboard Oceanic Discoverer departing on 3, 15 & 28 November 2011. The 12-night PNG itinerary is priced from $7,522.50 per person and the 15-night Melanesia itinerary is priced from $9,520 per person.

As part of the Spring Special, single travellers will be able to avoid the dreaded “single supplement” when they join Coral Princess Cruises in the Kimberley, Papua New Guinea or Melanesia on selected dates, a saving of up to $6,325.

The discounts apply to all new bookings on selected departures and are available until 10 October 2011 or until sold out.

For further information and reservations contact Coral Princess Cruises on 1800 079 545 or visit www.coralprincess.com.au.

Kimberley Cruise offers - FLY FREE

Want to do something now to help Save The Kimberley?

Hello Save The Kimberley supporters,
People often ask us what they can do to help in the campaign to stop inappropriate industrialisation of the Kimberley. The threat of an LNG processing precinct is at our doorstep, and quite a lot is happening in the campaign locally and nationally, so please keep updated by reading the 'latest news' page of our website and find us also on Facebook. To support Save The Kimberley financially visit our donations page.
We write to you today to tell you something simple and important that you can do from your own home if only you have a little time to spare.  A letter writing campaign has been launched in Broome to let our environment minister know that many of us have concerns about the gas and we need him to address these concerns. Environment Minister Tony Burke is expected to make his final decision on the cultural and environmental assessment for the project sometime later this year, so the more voices he hears, the better. Politicians tell us that letter writing is an extremely effective way to get politicians to listen, so please take the time to write a letter for the Kimberley.

Federal environment minister Tony Burke
Below is part of a letter writing guide from Environs Kimberley. You can see the whole thing at:
http://www.environskimberley.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-04-29-Letter-writing-flier.pdf
We would like to thank E.K. for making this information available to pass on to you.
For greatest effectiveness, please pass this on to any friends, family, or co-workers who might be sympathetic.
Warm regards,
The Save the Kimberley committee

Do you want to help in the fight against a gas hub on the Kimberley coast?
WRITE A LETTER TODAY!
Individual letters to politicians CAN make a real impact – it's well worth your time to send a letter, and to encourage your friends, family and colleagues to do so too. Letter writing is one of the best ways we have to make ourselves heard directly by decision makers!
Letter writing is a tried and true part of the political process – let's make use of it.
Federal Environment Minister Burke needs to hear from the community that we don't want this gas plant to go ahead, and that we consider HIM responsible for making sure it doesn't!
Here are some tips to write a powerful letter:
MAKE IT SHORT AND SNAPPY. i.e. try to get it on to one page.  Your letter doesn't have to be wordy, or spout lots of science facts or figures to be taken seriously.  Write your letter in your own words, with a simple summary of your main concerns.
INTRODUCE YOURSELF. e.g. …I've lived in Broome for xx years/I've visited Broome xx times… I am a small business owner/work in the tourism industry/am a teacher/nurse/doctor…
SAY WHY BROOME AND THE KIMBERLEY MATTERS TO YOU.  e.g. Broome/Kimberley is a very special place to me because:
…it's one of the few places in the world that hasn't been industrialized.
…very strong sense of place/community
…it's culturally diverse and tolerant.
…the Kimberley is one of the last large, intact natural areas in the world…

BRIEFLY OUTLINE YOUR CONCERNS.
Let the Minister know why you don't want the Kimberley industrialised, and what most concerns you about the proposed gas hub:
e.g…that the WA government is forcing the project on the community.
…I'm concerned about air pollution.
…I'm worried about what this will mean for my local community.
…I don't want Broome to become just another WA  mining town/the Kimberley to become another Pilbara.
TELL THE MINISTER YOU CONSIDER HIM RESPONSIBLE.
Make it clear that you consider the Minister has a responsibility to show leadership and protect the Kimberley's environment (i.e. decisions shouldn't just be made at the state level)
e.g. … Minister Burke, I understand that you have the final say on whether the gas proposal for James Price Point will go ahead.  You must not let this happen.
AT THE END, ASK A QUESTION SO THAT THE MINISTER HAS TO RESPOND TO YOUR LETTER.
e.g … Minister Burke, please tell me what action you plan to take to ensure that the Kimberley, one of the world's great natural areas, is protected? I look forward to your response.
SEND YOUR LETTER VIA THE POST, NOT EMAIL.

Address your letter to the Honorable Tony Burke MP, Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, PO Box 6022, House of Representatives, Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600.
The correct salutation to Minister Burke is Dear Minister (i.e. not Dear Mr. Burke or Dear Tony)

Kimberley Quest Cruise Deal

Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises offers "summer sail" 15% discount for Kimberley coast adventures

Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises has launched what it is calling a Summer Sail for its Kimberley coast cruises on the boutique Kimberley Quest II, just weeks before the start of winter.

PSCC is offering a 15 per cent discount on remaining cabins for the seven-day Southern Quest package operating between Mitchell Plateau and Broome over the winter-spring June-September 2011 season.

The deal means the price of the seven-day cruise is from $7093 per person twin share (normally from $8345) which includes cabin with ensuite, all chef-prepared meals served on the shady stern deck or in the air-conditioned lounge, full use of the vessel and guided land and water excursions, scenic light aircraft Broome-Mitchell Plateau flight and helicopter flight over Mitchell Falls in the transfer to the 18-passenger Kimberley Quest II.

Excursions to waterfalls (like King Cascade), rock pools, rock art, whale spotting, fishing and scenic tender excursions to the likes of must-see Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef are on the itinerary.

Cruising between destinations, there is plenty of time to take in the view from the spa on the forward deck or find a shady spot to read.

Contact: Tel 08 9193 6131, or see www.kimberleyquest.com.au

Why the Summer Sail tag?

Comment from Director, Lynne Ralston: "We have applied the summer tag because of summer-like weather the northern part of the continent experiences during this season. We'll be experiencing temperatures in the low to mid thirties and hopefully it will persuade chilling southerners to see this spectacular 'wow' piece of Australia in the most accommodating weather."

Jerry Hall Cruises The Kimberley Coast on The True North

Well known actress and model, Jerry Hall was on board Australia's own luxury adventure cruise, The True North last week where she and her partner enjoyed a one-week Kimberley cruise.

"The Kimberley is one of the last true wildernesses: it has not been spoilt by tourism or pollution and the best way to explore this ancient region is by cruising along its coast. For someone like me there is no better ship than the TRUE NORTH. It is a small luxury liner with just 18 cabins – serving delicious gourmet food and wine with a staff of 20 young, attractive and extremely efficient crew members. It is a top class operation whether you enjoy hiking through wilderness with their biologists, admiring the plants and birds or fishing for giant barramundi. Cruising along the Kimberley coast on the TRUE NORTH is the trip of a lifetime," said Jerry Hall.

Ms Hall is travelling with her partner, Perth millionaire Warwick Hensley, who is on assignment for the London Times. She will report on her travels when she returns home and the likely front-page exposure will hopefully be a major bonus for all tourism operators in the Kimberley.

The appeal of this gleaming adventure-platform complete with helicopter and multiple expedition boats was always bound to attract the attention of discerning overseas travelers and, according to North Star Cruises' general manager, Peter Trembath, the tide has begun to turn.

"In the past year we have attracted strong attention from both North America and Europe. And this interest is all the more pleasing when you consider that we are still up against uncertain world economics and adverse exchange rates. The reputation of the TRUE NORTH is so strong; we are managing to buck the negative trends," said Peter Trembath.

Offering activity-based itineraries all around the Australian coastline and adjacent to the remote jungles of West Papua and Papua New Guinea, the TRUE NORTH has become a firm favourite with Australia's travelling elite. Even today, most of the guests onboard the TRUE NORTH are well-qualified Australian adventurers lapping-up the personal attention of the ship's enthusiastic and also very Australian crew.

Over 25 years the adventure-cruise ship TRUE NORTH has developed one of Australia's most revered holiday reputations.  The multi-award winning adventure-cruise ship, True North, allows discerning guests to experience wilderness in surroundings more akin to one of the world's most exclusive hotels.

SPECIAL GUESTS JOIN TRUE NORTH IN 2011

North Star Cruises Australia is pleased to announce that some very special guests are scheduled to embark on the adventure-cruise ship TRUE NORTH during 2011 for part of the 'extraordinary people in extraordinary places' campaign.  Special guests to be announced for the first phase of the campaign include pioneers from the arts and entertainment industry with many more to be announced later in the year.

Jacinda Bayne
To kick off the campaign, guests will enjoy the company and insight of Jacinda Bayne who is a much-lauded landscape artist and recent winner of the Mandjar Art Award. Jacinda will surely be in awe of the 'waterfall season' when she joins a Kimberley Ultimate cruise in early April and guests will have unique opportunity to see Jacinda bring this spectacular landscape to canvas.

Multi-award winning art teacher, Mark Norval is fast establishing himself as a TRUE NORTH favourite. Mark's relaxed and informal lessons were very popular with guests when he completed a 2010 Kimberley cruise and the inspirational Kimberley will again be 'centre of piece' when Mark rejoins the TRUE NORTH in late April.

Sarah McKenzie
Sarah McKenzie will be a real treat for guests embarking on the TRUE NORTH in May. At 22 years of age Sarah is already a pianist, vocalist and composer of remarkable flare and technique. Sarah has performed at some of Australia's highest profile jazz events and alongside headliners such as James Morrison and Michael Buble. Sarah's performances in the ship's lounge are bound to compliment an already impressive stage.

True North also welcomes Linda Klarfeld who is one of Australia's most accomplished bronze sculptors. Her works can be seen in many venues from places of worship to sporting halls of fame. However, when Linda joins a Kimberley cruise in August it will be the first time that she has taken her art to sea. Linda will offer guests opportunity to 'try their hand' at sculpting and some may even be fortunate enough to have their Kimberley experience immortalised in a very different form indeed!

Phil Ceberano and Russell Robertson
True North is thrilled to welcome back one of Australia's most talented guitarists, Phil Ceberano.  Phil has previously impressed True North guests with his entertaining performances – both on and off the stage when he embarked on an 'Ultimate Kimberley' cruise in April 2010. This time Phil teams up with good mate and former AFL Star, Russell Robertson. Phil and Russell met during the filming of the TV show 'It Takes Two' where Russell was runner-up performing with Phil's sister the fabulous, Kate Ceberano.  The pair went on to record Russell's debut album 'Higher' with Phil producing and performing.  Phil & Russell perform around Australia for many one-off VIP events. No doubt we have a couple of characters on our hands and the entertainment is bound to extend well beyond the ship's lounge!

Welcome to the Wet Season!

We hope you've enjoyed a great start to 2011, and we look forward to keeping you informed of all the fun and action taking place across the Kimberley during the new season now just upon us.

If you ask any long-time Broome or Kimberley local how this year’s Wet Season is faring, you will hear a resounding "it's been amazing!”

After one of the biggest Wet Season's on record, it promises to be an impressive year in the Kimberley and we are excited about what we'll discover on our Kimberley Classic Adventures beginning next Saturday.

From December onwards we have had constant heavy rain on most days, amidst some of the most spectacular storms. It has bucketed down in the streets of Broome, and the heavens have opened onto the Kimberley Coastline, with Kuri Bay receiving an incredible recorded 1300 mm! While sadly the East has suffered terrible flooding, over here in the North West we have welcomed the wet conditions, for to us it brings the intense power and action to our countless magical waterfalls, making the Kimberley Coast one of the most astounding and majestic places on earth.

Renowned professional Kimberley photographer Yane Sotiroski, had the very good fortune of viewing the coastline by helicopter recently, and came back with some stunning snaps taken from the air. You can view the gallery here. Yane has lived in Broome since the age of 5, experiencing a lot of Wet Seasons over the years, and on reflection Yane says "this year I'd have to say is one of the best. This truly is a beautiful part of the world. I think this year the Cascades, Mitchell Falls and the mighty King George will be flowing well into the Dry Season." Have a look at Kings Cascades thundering down in this very short video taken from the chopper. Taken from a phone camera!

Yane will be travelling on the 13 night Kimberley Classic Adventure departing April 2nd and welcomes budding photographers to join him for an unsurpassed photographic experience in the Kimberley due to the sensational conditions. Yane will be available for on-site photographic workshopping and advice. To view Yane's photographic work visit www.yane.com.au

For anyone considering cruising the Kimberley Coast, with time to travel this year, you would be absolutely mad not to take advantage of this year's phenomenal Wet Season follow-on.

If you're keen to join in this experience we have just 3 Horizon View Staterooms remaining on the 2nd April 2011 departure (the 2nd cruise for the season), and only 2 Horizon View Staterooms remaining on the 30th April departure for our 13 night Kimberley Classic Adventures. Email us or phone 08 9193 5983 for more information.

Their sizes mean that the ships can maneuver hard-to-reach points of interest such as the Great Barrier Reef that larger vessels can't.

For example, an 8-day Great Barrier Reef small ship cruise aboard Coral Princess is the "most popular and most comprehensive Great Barrier Reef cruise available in Australia," combining the lore of discoverer Captain Cook with the intrigue of the reef itself. Guests rub elbows with marine biologists and snorkel and dive nearly at whim. Rates are from AUD$2,883 per person double, representing "one of the best values in cruise vacations to be found anywhere in the world," according to AdventureSmith Explorations. Departures from Townsville and Cairns are weekly year-round. For details please see:

http://www.adventuresmithexplorations.com/itinerarydetails.php/advid/324

"Smaller boats mean more activity for guests," said Todd Smith, founder and director of AdventureSmith Explorations. "It is a lot easier to get 46 snorkeling-bound passengers onto the reef than it is to get 100 there. Plus Coral Princess has more experience as a dive/snorkel operator, having pioneered reef cruising in the region."

Small ship cruising in Australia is up according to Smith and 2011 is promising to be a banner year.

"According to Tourism Australia, it continues to be one of the hottest destinations in the world with 2010 visitors increasing by 6% over 2009. One of the hottest trends seen, Australia small ship cruise business has increased an impressive 30% each year for the past two years. Tourism Australia anticipates an even larger increase in 2011," said Smith.

Smith said that the fleet makes available "Explorer," an awning-draped aluminum excursion vessel used for landings and extensive exploration of King George Falls and secluded rivers.

Another cruise adventure accesses the Kimberley, a region on the northwest side of Australia bordering the Indian Ocean. An 11-day cruise is from AUD$6,950 per person double. The cruise aboard Coral Princess II or Oceanic Discoverer begins from the frontier towns of either Darwin or Broome and makes extensive use of "Explorer" on forays along the Outback. An Invitation to the Kimberley's Remote Coast from Aurora Expeditions

© Andrew Halsall

Discover this magical yet remote coastline with legendary Kimberley expeditioner, Mike Cusack on the Coral Princess. In 1987, Mike and his wife Susan were chosen to be the first Australian Geographic's Wilderness Couple. Mike will share his experiences with you of this once forbidding ancient and forgotten land.

Unlock her secrets in over one thousand miles of towering cliffs, plunging waterfalls, and beckoning white beaches which will touch your soul like no where else on Earth. After a remarkable wet season this year, Kimberley will be at its best for the start of Aurora Expeditions' thirteenth season.

Join Mike on the Kunmunya 'Wilderness' Walk, exclusive to Aurora Expeditions' passengers. The optional 9.5 km, or seven hour, rock-hopping journey is an inspirational and authentic bush experience, and one of the best ways to discover the true heart of the Kimberley.

32404.jpgWith such an isolated coastline, many of the Kimberley Coast's most fascinating sites can only be accessed by sea. Passengers will visit islands with nesting boobies and frigate birds, revel in the amazing Montgomery Reef, uncover the ancient secrets of Aboriginal rock art galleries and participate in the excitement of spotlighting saltwater crocodiles. Carved by millions of years of extreme tidal patterns, complex river systems, waterfalls and freshwater swimming holes complete the Kimberley delights.

The voyages will also be joined by eminent indigenous art historian Garry Darby and the inimitable Chris Done, whose years of research as a naturalist bring the wonders of the Kimberley Coast to life.

As with all Aurora Expedition's voyages, emphasis is placed on a combination of interactive experiences with the environment and a strong educational element. Our onboard team of lecturers and naturalists are Kimberley experts who interpret history, plants and animals from Aboriginal and European perspectives.

Departures still available in May and June 2011.

Voyages 1 & 2 - Broome to Broome

Depart - 30th May & 10th June 2011 (11 days)

These unique expeditions travel from Broome to Bigge Island off the Kimberley's northwest coast and back again. Voyage 3 - Broome to Darwin

Secrets of the Kimberley

The relative cool of autumn is a fine time of year to take in one of the world's last great wilderness areas, the Kimberley.

Its coastline is a craggy land of deep gorges, coral reefs and mangroves, and World Expeditions (www.worldexpeditions.com or 1300 720 000) gives travellers a window on this wild land from their expedition cruise boat Odyssey on a nine-day cruise, accessing the Kimberley coastline without the need for weeks of punishing bush-bashing in a 4WD.

The cruise leaves Broome and heads north into this unforgiving place, where you'll encounter such remote gems as the thousand-island Buccaneer Archipelago with its horizontal waterfalls, white sandy beaches and Aboriginal sites.

The accent is on day walks and shore exploration, including visits to the Lacepede Islands, Montgomery Reef, Sale River, Prince Regent River, King Cascade and Camp Creek.

From Naturaliste Island passengers will have the chance to take a stunning helicopter flight over the Mitchell Falls before flying back to Broome.

All meals are included, as are Zodiac excursions and helicopter transfers.

The trip departs continually from the beginning of April, also operating in reverse, and costs $7200 for a standard cabin.

“Awesome” wet season bodes well for Kimberley coastal cruising

A very wet, yet “awesome” wet season will mean spectacular waterfalls for the March-May start of the Kimberley cruise season, according to Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises which has been operating cruises there for 17 years.

PSCC Director Jeff Ralston said Broome had 400mm of rain in January alone, compared to 140mm last year, “so there is already plenty of water across the region to sustain the spectacular nature of our waterfalls and rock pools”.

“While we are mindful of the damage and heartache brought by big summer rains in the eastern states, for our tourist industry the rains here are awesome and that will mean great conditions for seeing the Kimberley coast at its very natural best,” he said.

Kimberley cruise discounts for 2011 and 2012

Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises is offering discounts on its seven and 13-day Kimberley coast cruises this year and next year -- a five percent discount for two or three cabins booked together or a 10 per cent discount for four-plus cabins booked together.

PSCC operates the boutique Kimberley Quest II, a nine-cabin/18-passenger cruiser, on seven-day cruises between Broome and Mitchell Falls and Wyndham and the Mitchell Falls plus 13-day cruises between Broome and Wyndham.

PSCC Director Jeff Ralston said there was still availability across the March-May start to the season which continues until October.

The seven-day cruises are from $8345 per person twin share and the 13-day itineraries are from $12,095. There are four cabin styles.

The prices include private cabin with ensuite bathroom, all chef-prepared meals served on the shady stern deck or in the air-conditioned lounge, full use of the vessel and guided land and water excursions. The seven-day cruise price also includes a light aircraft and helicopter flight between Broome and the Mitchell Plateau.

On 12 of 25 departures, naturalist and researcher Tim Willing is on board to provide expert commentary on this region’s stunning flora and fauna.

Excursions to waterfalls, rock pools, rock art, for bush walking, bird watching, nature viewing, and fishing (to eat) and scenic tender rides to the must-see Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef are on the itinerary. So too is time out to relax in the spa on the forward deck, or to help yourself to the caffe latte machine day and night on the stern deck.

Orion's Inland Sea of Japan - Samurai, Sake and Soba

315259.jpg
Orion Expedition Cruises' new ship Orion II will be making her inaugural voyages to Japan in June and July 2011. The ten night Inland Sea of Japan voyages live up the promise of a path less travelled, with the specialist expedition team introducing guests to insider experiences, many exclusive to Orion.

Orion II will visit Kanazawa, one of the few places in Japan where geisha culture is still alive, its 100 year old former geisha house retaining the look and feel of 19th century Japan. Guests will enjoy a traditional tea ceremony at Kenrokuen Garden, considered to be one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan. Ponds, fountains, waterfalls, pagodas and bridges harmonise within landscaped gardens first established in the 17th century by the feudal lords of Kaga as their private garden.

Cruise the moat surrounding imposing Matsue Castle; learn to make Soba noodles; stroll the main street of Sakaiminato with hundreds of bronze statues depicting animated cartoon monsters and enjoy a visit to Sakai's Sake brewery to sample their fine rice wine.

The path less travelled varies according to each voyage, including an introduction to the strict code of the samurai when guests meet a direct descendent of the Shoguns. Or guests may witness an extraordinary special event, the Sumo of the Bulls. Far from the barbaric Spanish bull rings, and in keeping with the respect shown to Ushioni, the great bull demon, participating bulls are treated with great respect. Two massive bulls pit their intuition against each other, locking horns until one of the bulls is brought to its knees, the other declared the victor.

Other experiences include traditional drumming with Japan's best Taiko drum troupe, Kodo, and a trip in a Taraibune - round barrel boats traditionally used to collect abalone and other molluscs from narrow coves.

An added attraction on these voyages is a side-trip to Busan (South Korea) with its world renowned Jalgachi Fish Market, arguably the best of its kind in the world, where every kind of edible sea creature is on sale.

With Orion even traditional Japanese highlights have an unexpected twist. A visit to one of the most recognisable images of Japan, the large vermillion coloured O-Torii symbolic entrance gate to the Miyajima (Shrine Island) is itself visually spectacular, yet when Orion II visits guests will be treated to an exclusive Kagura performance, with sacred music and dance of traditional ceremonies held in Japanese shrines.

The visit to Hiroshima revolves around the Peace Park, Peace Museum and the A-Bomb Dome and includes meeting one of the few remaining survivors of the actual bombing who will relate personal experiences of that day and life since the bombing in Hiroshima (the lecture will be translated into English).

Art lovers will be excited when, in Kurashiki with its cobblestone streets and boutique shops lining the river, guests visit the Ōhara Museum of Art. Established in 1930 by Magosaburō Ōhara, the museum houses works by El Greco, Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, and Renoir.

Mixing traditional highlights with the unexpected - providing fascinating insights into the culture, history and geography of a region - is part of Orion's DNA, revealed this time during inaugural expeditions to Japan.

PLEASE NOTE: some aspects of these itineraries may change as arrangements are finalised and not all shore experiences are included on each voyage - refer to Orion Expedition Cruises or your travel agent for detailed itineraries. Check for latest updates on www.orionexpeditions.com

Aurora Expeditions' Kimberley Adventures educational event (Sydney)

Fine arts and aboriginal arts specialist lecturer to share insights into Aurora Expeditions' Kimberley Adventures

Aurora Expeditions are offering you the chance to meet Dr. Garry Darby, an art historian, lecturer and author specialising in Aboriginal art. Garry will give an illustrated talk about Wandjina and Bradshaw art and share his own personal insights of the Kimberley region.

The Kimberley event will take place from 6-8pm on Wednesday the 9th of February at Aurora Expeditions office ( Suite 201, Level 2, 88 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney)

Garry lectures at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University and has three degrees in fine arts. He has studied at the University of New England and the University of Sydney. He specialises in Aboriginal art and has led flying study tours into Central Australia, Arnhem Land and the Kimberley for the past ten years. Garry acts as consultant for corporate collectors and Sydney galleries and regularly teaches courses about all aspects of Aboriginal and western art history at Sydney institutions and colleges. In 1999 Dr Darby was part of a team which staged the outstanding exhibition "Desert Dreaming" at the United Nations Building, New York.

He has curated a number of exhibitions of Aboriginal art in Sydney including 'Desert Dreamtime' at Kambala, 'Exploring the Dreamtime' at Trinity Grammar School and "Wandjina!: Art of the Kimberley" at Macquarie University. In the latter he worked very closely with Mowanjum artist Donny Woolagoodja.

Aurora Expeditions' own expedition experts will also be on hand to answer any questions about travelling to the Kimberley Coast in 2011 / 2012 or any of their other destinations.

Over the years, Aurora Expeditions has expanded its scope from polar exploration to include new, rarely explored destinations such as Papua New Guinea, the Kimberley and the Russian Coast. In its quest to seek destinations that push the boundaries of travel, Aurora Expeditions has purposely kept the number of participants on each departure small, allowing more intimate encounters with wildlife and cultures, and lessening its impact on the regions visited.

Along with the guidance of its experienced founders, Aurora Expeditions' dynamic team all share a great respect for natural and cultural environments. Aurora Expeditions continues to approach expedition travel as a catalyst for making a difference in one's life, and in the world.
