Sven-Olof Lindblad's Kimberley experience aboard Orion

October 2013

Dear Fellow Traveller,

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of travelling, unfortunately briefly, on National Geographic Orion in the Kimberley, but that short visit made quite an impact. I have said repeatedly that Australians have amazing geographies in their backyard and the idea that a region so stunning and filled with marvels is an easy voyage away, is truly remarkable. As one who has spent a lifetime exploring remote and pristine parts of the globe, I believe the Kimberley ranks as one of the most spirit-expanding places I have ever visited.

Our job is to provide meaningful expedition experiences for our guests and in the Kimberley we have incredible resources: an expedition team with ten years of local experience, augmented by knowledgeable Lindblad Expedition veterans, for a staff- to-guest ratio that ensures an exceptional experience. Plus, the best expedition ship in the region, National Geographic Orion, is equipped with a first-class suite of exploration tools to reveal the many facets of the Kimberley.

Then, when you have the prospect of a Kimberley experience before you, isn't it great to know that you'll make memories and have a visual record, too? On National Geographic Orion, you can confidently assume it. A National Geographic photographer and a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor accompany every departure this season—to inspire and help you. I find that guests who might never have considered themselves photographers get involved in the photography fun aboard and end up thrilled with their results, whether they're using a smartphone camera, a point-and-shoot, or sophisticated gear.

I am very gratified that the Kimberley is part of the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic global expedition portfolio. On behalf of our enthusiastic team, I look forward to welcoming you aboard and to sharing a Kimberley adventure with you in 2014.

All the best,
Sven-Olof Lindblad

Coral Princess Cruises releases "Spring Special" on Kimberley Expedition Cruises

Inline images 1

Coral Princess Cruises, Australia's and the South Pacific's pioneer of small-ship expedition cruising, is offering Spring Specials on selected Kimberley expeditions during August and September 2013 aboard their state-of-art, 72 passenger small-ship Oceanic Discoverer. In great news for single travellers, Coral Princess has waived the single supplement across the eligible departures, a saving of up to $4,895 per person. When two passengers travel together in the same stateroom a 15% discount is offered, a saving of up to $3,087 per couple.

For even greater savings, the 15% Spring Special discount can be combined with Coral Princess's Xplorers Club past passenger discounts of up to 10%. The Kimberley wilderness of Western Australia is twice the size of the state of Victoria, with a population of just 30 000. There is no better way to discover the remarkable Kimberley than aboard a purpose built small-ship, and Coral Princess's 10-night voyages between Darwin and Broome explore some of the planet's oldest and most awe-inspiring landscapes.

The Kimberley's rivers carve their way through ancient, eroded mountains that were once the height of the Himalaya, dropping in champagne waterfalls such as the 80-metre King George Falls. Excursions ashore visit rock art galleries where Bradshaw (Gwion) paintings - the world's oldest known art - record a human history stretching back 50,000 years.

Exploring the Kimberley Coast in August and September affords guests the unique opportunity to experience the region's annual whale migration. The cruise also explores the 800-odd islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago, including an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the Horizontal Waterfalls, where the largest tides in the southern hemisphere force their way between rocky cliffs in a formidable display of the forces of nature.

Spring Special prices for the 10-night Kimberley expedition start at $7,471.50 per person, twin share (or $6,592.50 for past passengers) whilst single traveller fares start at $8,790. The Spring Special discounts are available on Oceanic Discoverer expeditions departing on 26 August, 6 September and 16 September 2013. The reduced prices include all meals, lectures and services of expedition staff and excursions. The discounts apply to all new bookings on eligible departures and are available until sold out. News from Broome and the Kimberley Coast

We don't know where the time goes, however everyone who has escaped with us to the Kimberley Coast this season has certainly made the most of it!

We've welcomed many groups of friends aboard this year for exclusive charters. It's always a particularly festive escape when friends book out the whole boat. With champagne and seafood barbeque picnics at hidden waterfalls, sunset drinks in fancy dress from red-rock peaks with spectacular views, cocktail parties on board, relaxing afternoons fishing, and bathing in the pristine waters of Silicone beach, our cruise photos in the gallery show some of the fun and festivities on board this year.

We introduced two new cruise itineraries to the schedule this year, including our 8 night Waterfall Safari directly after the end of the "Wet" Season, which was a sensational 9 days covering over 25 waterfalls between Broome and Wyndham. Next year's Waterfall Safari is already fully booked, however we have just released our 2014 cruise schedule and bookings are underway already for the following year!

The Great Escape Charter Company is one of the original Kimberley Charter boat operators, exploring the Kimberley coast and Rowley Shoals for over 10 years.

North Star Cruises: True North

North Star Cruises was the first permanent and is now the longest established charter cruise operator to cover the vast wilderness of the far north of Western Australia. Owner Craig Howson has been leading exploration, diving and fishing cruises in the region since 1987.

The company specialises in live-aboard wilderness cruises along 2000 kilometres of Kimberley coastline and coral atoll cruises at the Rowley Shoals - three atolls perched on the edge of Australia's continental shelf, 300 kilometres west of Broome.

Now based in Broome, the company commenced operations in Fremantle, Western Australia, in June 1985, placing an order for a 15 metre launch, North Star surveyed to carry 6 passengers and 2 crew for overnight charters and 14 passengers and 2 crew for day charters.

In April 1987, Craig Howson decided to seek work in Broome. There, he began day fishing and diving charters with demand soon growing for longer cruises. His company initiated the first live-aboard charters along the Kimberley coast and to the Rowley Shoals. In the 1987 season, Craig chartered three ‘True North Wilderness Cruises’ and three ‘True North Coral Atoll Cruises’ dive trips.

Market demand for North Star trips soon increased, so in April 1991 North Star IV was launched… and in September 1993, a new 70-foot luxurious vessel, True North, was launched to accommodate 14 passengers (10 comfortably) and 3 crew for overnight charters and 22 passengers and 3 crew for day charters. In 1998, to meet market demands for increased occupancy, comfort and further exploration, another vessel was launched.

However the companies most recent vessel, launched on Thursday 25th November 2004, is by far the most impressive.

The ship, again called True North, was built by Image Marine, a division of Austal Ships, builders of Greg Norman's Aussie Rules. At a cost of $12 million, she represents the largest single investment in Western Australia's marine tourism industry and is now yours to enjoy.

ICCA Extols Small Ship Cruising

ICCA GM, Brett Jardine
Within the cruise industry we all knowthere are many different types of cruiseholidays but are you getting this messagethrough to your clients.

Consumers thrive on making a purchasethat offers great value. The words ‘cruising’ and ‘great value’ gohand in hand but it is important to note thatvalue does not come down to price alone.

For some, a large ship experience at alower price point is good value, for others asmall ship cruise experience at a higherprice point is good value.

How do you determine where your clientfits – QUALIFY them!Small ship “cruise passengers” tend todream of visiting more off the beaten trackdestinations and look for a fulfillingexperience at such places.

How many clients have you offered acruise holiday to, only to be told “no thanks,a cruise is not for me”?I’ll bet most of these people only considera cruise to be a large ship with thousands ofpeople and really have no idea of (a) what alarge ship experience really can offer or (b)that there are other possibilities such as asmall ship experience that will in fact meettheir holiday expectations in every respect. In many areas small ship cruising providesa very different experience from whatclients expect of a cruise holiday.

A few of the following points may helpyou to define such an experience withclients in the future.Smaller more intimate ships; focus on thedestination rather than the ship; potentiallyflexible itineraries; fewer but like-mindedpassengers; more personal experience(with other guests and crew); usuallyinformal (morelikely casual ratherthan glamour) andin most casessingle open seatdining.

I’m sure you canfind plenty ofclients that will seesome value in anoption like this!

Cruising the Kimberley coast in comfort

James Shrimpton AAP

The 120-tonne coastal cruiser Kimberley Quest II is not much bigger than one of 18 lifeboats aboard the world's largest passenger ship, the 252,282-tonne Allure of the Seas.

But we'd bet that the 25-metre-long KQ2's 18 passengers (maximum) sailing the Kimberley coast of Western Australia would have at least as good a time - in a different way - as the 6,300 or so aboard her 360m-long "big sister" plying the western Caribbean.

No crowded lounges, restaurants and swimming pools here, no stage shows, no casinos, no bingo and no long queues to go ashore - no making new friends the first day out then never seeing them again.

KQ2's voyages between Broome and Wyndham include expeditions by custom-built tenders and on bush tracks into the Kimberley Coast wilderness, a colourful and historic area of craggy rocks, waterfalls, exotic birds and animal life - and ancient rock art.

The Rowley Shoals - the "bucket list" dive experience

Greetings from sunny Broome! We hope this finds you well and enjoying a great year so far, and a lovely start to Spring.

We're already beginning to wind up our wilderness adventure cruises along the Kimberley Coast for the season and before we know it we'll be heading west again, to visit the breathtaking underwater jewel of the Kimberley, the Rowley Shoals.

In Sydney during the Australian Tourism Exchange this year we heard from many international diving tour organisers who all agreed the Rowley Shoals is a dream destination for diving fanatics worldwide. It continues to be highly protected by the Department of Environment and Conservation, and as there are only a few tour operators allowed access to the Rowley Shoals, it is a highly sought after dive destination.

These three coral atolls lying west of Broome are home to a mesmerizing 688 species of fish and 233 varieties of coral. With visibility between 40-60 metres, warm tropical waters, and variety of dive environments including sheer walls, caves, lagoons, drift channels and spectacular coral gardens, the Rowley Shoals are a true paradise for snorkelers and divers alike.

The short season runs between the end of October and the start of December each year, and we have 3 dive and snorkel adventures in our 2011 season schedule.
Special Last-Minute offer on remaining availability

As we are now just 5 weeks away from our Rowley Shoals season starting, we have released our special last-minute offers on all remaining availability.

The offer includes 30% off the full fare price of both Horizon View Staterooms and Panoramic View Staterooms, and a nights stay at Broome's new 5 star The Pinctada Resort post-cruise.

The 5 night dive and snorkel adventure is now reduced to $2, 885 per person twin share in a Horizon View Stateroom, and the 7 night dive and snorkel adventure is now reduced to $3, 990 per person in a Horizon View Stateroom.

Please email us or call us on 08 9193 5983 for more information or to make a booking.

Specially scheduled dive & snorkel adventure... bring the kids!

This year The Great Escape Charter Company welcomes all children to the Rowley Shoals for a specially scheduled family dive and snorkel adventure.

In addition to the stunning sites for children to snorkel at, a swag of other fun activities are planned for children including skurfing, boat bombies, fishing, and visiting the stunning white sands of Bedwell Island. You can be sure there will be plenty of additional entertainment onboard from the fun and friendly crew, and on-screen entertainment with kids movies in the evening. After that the adults get the run of the boat!

Call us on (08) 9193 5983 to make a reservation, or email us for more information and prices.

Coral Princess Cruises releases Kimberley 'Waterfall Season" Savings

Australia's pioneer of small-ship expedition cruising Coral Princess Cruises is offering 'Waterfall Season" specials of between 15 and 25 per cent off normal prices on their 10-night Kimberley Coast expeditions. The savings are valid on April 2012 departures aboard their state-of-the-art 72 passenger small ship Oceanic Discoverer or the intimate 35 metre catamaran Coral Princess.  The release of the special coincides with the launch of Coral Princess's new 2012/13 Kimberley and Cape York and Arnhem Land expedition cruise brochure.
The Kimberley wilderness of Western Australia is three times larger than England with a population of just 30 000. Coral Princess's voyages between Darwin and Broome cruise through one of the planet's oldest and most awe-inspiring scenery and landscapes. Exploring the Kimberley Coast in April, immediately following the 'wet season', affords guests the unique opportunity to experience the region's spectacular waterfalls in their full grandeur. From the towering 80-metre King George Falls, four-tiered Mitchell Falls and the iconic King Cascades to the amazing natural phenomenon of Horizontal Falls and lesser-known highlights such as swimming beneath beautiful Ruby Falls, Coral Princess's Kimberley itinerary includes all of the icons of this spectacular coast in unrivalled style and total comfort.
Oceanic Discoverer
Waterfall Season prices for the 10-night Kimberley cruise aboard Oceanic Discoverer start at $6,517.50 per person for Coral Princess Cruises past guests (25% off) and $7,386.50 for first time travellers (15% off) in a Main Deck (Category B) Stateroom. Special prices aboard Coral Princess start at $5,242.50 for past guests and $5,941.50 for first time travellers in a Cabin category room. The reduced prices include all meals, lectures and services of the all-Australian expedition staff and excursions aboard a fleet of zodiacs and the unique 'Xplorer' excursion tender. The discounts apply to all new bookings on April 2012 departures and are available until 31 December 2011 or until sold out.
Coral Princess Cruises pioneered small-ship expedition cruising on the Kimberley Coast in 1996 and has 34 departures scheduled across the 2012 season, which runs between April and October. As a 100% Australian-owned, flagged and staffed operation, Coral Princess guests avoid the need to transit an international port as part of their Kimberley itinerary, a guideline applying to foreign owned and flagged operators in the region. With a minimum of two landings most days Coral Princess guests will enjoy the opportunity to see more of the Kimberley and make the most of every minute of their expedition.
For further information and reservations contact Coral Princess Cruises on 1800 079 545 or visit www.coralprincess.com.au.

Wilderness cruising faces change

Two of the world’s most pristine cruising regions have this week been subject to significant changes. AUSTRALIA’S Kimberley and Ecuador’s Galapagos are in the midst of transformations that may have an impact on cruise tourism. Yesterday’s heritage-listing of WA’s West Kimberley region (TD 30 Aug) has been hailed as a breakthrough for domestic tourism, but it is not yet known how it will effect activities of passenger ships.

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke said the ruling would protect almost 20 million hectares of land including extensive stretches of the coast. But environment groups have questioned why the site of a huge gas development at James Price Point has been largely excluded. Meanwhile, in the Galapagos National Park, new rules are set to ban cruise ships from visiting most islands more than once in a 14-day period. Effective from 01 Feb 2012, the regulations directly involve 50 cruise companies that operate in the Galapagos.

But tour operators hope the restrictions will improve passengers’ experience as they may often be on board the only ship at some ecologically sensitive sites. The new rules will also open up wildlife-rich areas such as Tagus Cove, which was closed several years ago to vessels with more than 40 pax. Snorkelling, kayaking and boat rides will also be regulated, with activities assigned to specific sites and times to avoid overlapping by cruise lines.

Kimberley coast 2012 cruise 20% discount

Cruising the coast of the heritage-listed Kimberley

Kimberley Quest adds 10-day cruise next year and releases 20% earlybird deals

A 10-day Adventure Quest cruise has been added to boutique Kimberley Quest's program of six, eight and 14-day cruises along northern West Australia's rugged Kimberley coastline next year.

Releasing the 2012 itineraries for Kimberley Quest this week, Pearl Sea Coastal Cruises also announced 20 per cent discount earlybird deals for new bookings made between September 1 and January 31, on 8, 10 and 14-day cruises in 2012.

The deal on the new cruise, for example, means the price is from $7200 per person instead of from $9000.

Director, Lynne Ralston said that in recent years Kimberley Quest II skippers had discovered several secret spots that could be easily accessed by the stylish 18-passenger Kimberley Quest for a 10-day Broome-Broome trip.

"We can explore many untouched places that we rarely have the opportunity to visit," she said. "While we have been operating cruises along the coast for 18 years we're still learning her secrets."

The price includes cabin with ensuite, all chef-prepared meals served on the shady stern deck or in the air-conditioned lounge, full use of the vessel (that includes the spa pool on the forward deck) and guided land and water excursions.

Departures are August 21 and August 30.

The itinerary includes Cape Leveque, Buccaneer Archipelago, Dugong Bay, Yampi Sound, Talbot Bay, Montgomery Reef, Sale River, Raft Point, Doubtful Bay, Camden Harbour, Rothsway Water, Prince Regent River, Cathedral Falls and King Cascade, Camp Creek and Hanover Bay, Heywood, Champagny Island and Adele Island.

Kimberley Quest II offers four cabin styles, all with ensuite facilities.

Twenty-five departures -- listed as "expeditions" by PSCC -- across six itineraries are scheduled for 2012 in a season running from March 27 to October 8.

Two of three eight-day fishing expeditions are booked out.

Lead-in full fare prices are from $6,200 per person, twin share for the six-day Captains Quest, from $8345 for both the eight-day Northern Quest and Southern Quest, from $7.200 for the six-day Fishing Expedition and from $12, 095 for the 14-day Ultimate Quest.

The 14-day itinerary is cruising between Broome and Wyndham, the Southern Quest is between Broome and Mitchell Plateau, the Northern Quest is between Mitchell Plateau and Wyndham and the Captains Quest is between Mitchell River and Hunter River.  The Fishing trip is between Hunter River and Broome.

Prices for cruises featuring Mitchell Plateau include a helicopter flight as well as light aircraft transfers to/from Broome.

Heritage listing for Kimberley

FEDERAL Environment Minister Tony Burke has today announced the heritage listing of Western Australia’s West Kimberley Region, with the move hailed as a significant breakthrough for domestic tourism in Australia. About 19 million hectares is covered by the decision, including the coastline of the Dampier Peninsula from Cape Leveque to Cambridge Gulf, the Kimberley Plateau and the Fitzroy River.

Burke said the region “belongs on a list of the places which define Australia,” while Tourism Australia md Andrew McEvoy said the “terrific news” would “add to the credentials of the Kimberley as a must-visit destination”. Intrepid Travel has been keen for the listing, with the operator’s Kimberley business mgr, Jelena Mitrovic, telling TD this morning she was thrilled at the decision.

“This puts the Kimberley alongside other Australian icons such as the Great Barrier Reef in terms of marketing to international travellers,” she said. “It’s a major step in protecting and boosting tourism in the region,” she added. The Kimberley is already part of Tourism Australia’s National Landscapes program.

North Star Continues to Celebrate

131183.jpg

After enjoying yet another successful season in the Kimberley, North Star Cruises, operators of the adventure-cruise ship TRUE NORTH, are getting ready to sail east to Papua New Guinea. The company not only offers luxury adventure-cruises all around the Australian coastline but also in the stunning waters of the South Pacific and this year celebrates 25 years as one of Australia's most-loved tour operators.

Guests disembarking from the TRUE NORTH consistently respond with "that's the best holiday I have ever had!"

Those fortunate enough to secure a cabin on the PNG cruises, aptly named Adventures in Paradise, can look forward to a long list of daily activities including snorkelling over ditched WWII tanks, SCUBA diving and fantastic game fishing.  Guests can also enjoy treks into the jungle and opportunities to explore the beautiful fiords of Tufi. There are exhilarating helicopter flights including a visit to the Kokoda Track and flights over Rabaul's active volcano and, strolls on the uninhabited Lusancay Islands.   There are also plenty of opportunities for guests to experience village life and local culture. The warmth and friendliness of the villagers is often overwhelming. The cruise also includes return flights from Cairns in a private charter plane - saving valuable time for more adventure!

Over the past 25 years North Star has become revered as a provider of unique holiday experiences. Not bad for a small company that is 100% Australian owned and, a real pat on the back for a young Aussie crew who have developed an equally revered reputation for service and attention to detail.
